VIDEO: Nathan Gangelhoff Interview
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Women’s Tennis kept its winning ways rolling with its biggest win of the season thus far against No. 44 Coker.
Facing its first ranked opponent of the season, Carson-Newman (8-2, 5-0 South Atlantic Conference) stepped up to the challenge dispatching No. 44 Coker (10-4, 6-2 SAC) in a 4-2 decision at home.
“It’s joy, it’s relief, it’s happiness all mixed up into one,” Carson-Newman Women’s Tennis head coach Nathan Gangelhoff said. “I’m super proud of our girls. There is just no give up in our girls.”
After Coker took the doubles point, the two sides split the first two singles flights to give the Cobras a 2-1 lead before the Eagles tallied off three singles wins to clinch its fifth straight conference victory to open the season.
Leah McBride battled in a back-and-forth emotional contest eventually clinching the match mobbed by her teammates as the Eagles earned their sixth win in a row.
“That last game was extremely nerve-racking,” McBride said. “I was just trying to do my best to be as steady as I could and wait for my shots. Put every ball back in play, play with the wind, and when (my opponent) hit that last ball out, it was like Christmas.”
The highlight of singles came from the No. 6 flight as Maria del Mar Sarda Marti swept both sets against the individual from Coker.
