SUMTER, S.C. – Carson-Newman Men’s Tennis has extended its stay and has set up a date with two-seed Wingate in the SAC Semifinals.
Carson-Newman (11-7, 7-5 South Atlantic Conference) got the biggest upset of the SAC Men’s Tennis Tournament, taking down its in-state rival Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday afternoon. Now, it gets a match with the tenth ranked team nationally, and two seed at the tournament in Wingate (16-1, 11-1 SAC).
Wingate has been on fire all season and it has led them to being ranked No. 10 in the latest ITA Team poll released on Wednesday morning. The Bulldogs have only dropped one match all season, and it was to SAC regular season champions, Catawba in a tight 4-3 contest.
Although Carson-Newman fell in its regular season meeting with Wingate, the Eagles have the distinction of being the most recent team to score a team point on the Bulldogs after C-N took the doubles point behind an all-deciding tiebreaker on Court No. 3 with Marnix Van Dalen and Paul Gayk prevailing.
Wingate is led by Carlo Rosellini and Rodrigo De la Torre, who entered the SAC Tournament at 12-0 and 12-1, respectively.
The Bulldogs are coming off a quarterfinal sweep of Anderson, where they clinched doubles in two matches before handing the Trojans in singles play, outscoring them 36-15 in completed matches.
The winner between Carson-Newman and Wingate advances to the SAC Championship Match against the winner of the other semifinal between Catawba and Limestone.
First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. A free audio stream will be available courtesy of RadioTennis.com.
