Atchley returns to C-N coaching staff, Ingram finalizes positions

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head football coach Ashley Ingram has announced the hiring and return of Jonathan Atchley to coach outside linebackers for the program.

Atchley returns to Carson-Newman after a year at Western Kentucky working with the defensive line. In his first stint with C-N, he worked with the defensive line. He begins his second stint working with outside linebackers.

In his year at WKU, Atchley worked with three All-CUSA defensive linemen in defensive tackles Dallas Walker and Hosea Wheeler, as well as end Deante McCray.

Atchley helped tutor Jacorey Long to All-Mountain Division honors on the defensive front in 2023.  Long would go on to receive a pair of postseason laurels from the league in his career.

Atchley is the fourth member of his family to become affiliated with the Carson-Newman football program.  His brother Harrison was a wide receiver for the program from 2012-15.  His father DJ played from 1982-86.  Finally, a cousin Reed Atchley played in the early 2000s.

Atchley wrapped up his degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from East Tennessee State University.  He has spent the last four years as an assistant coach working with wide receivers and defensive backs at his high school alma mater, The King’s Academy.

Additionally, Ingram has moved Edgar Weiser to special teams. Chuck Petersen will continue as offensive coordinator and move from quarterbacks to receivers. Tanner Fleming takes over quarterbacks and B-Backs. Antonio Goss has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator and will work with corner backs.  Meanwhile, Caleb Goins shimmies full time to inside linebackers.
