JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the ninth straight week, Carson-Newman baseball (37-17) is ranked by the American Baseball Coaches Association, moving back to No. 22 in the latest poll that was released on Tuesday morning.
Overall, this is Carson-Newman’s eighth appearance in the coaches poll, having been ranked as high as nine this season. This is the fourth straight week C-N has moved back in the rankings.
Head coach Tom Griffin had led the program to a 37-17 record this season. It’s C-N’s most wins in a season since 2008 and the second-most in a season in the Griffin era. Overall, it’s the program’s fourth-most wins in a season in program history. The Eagles compiled their most wins in a conference regular season, winning 21 games in league play this season. 21 of the 37 wins for the year have been at home, the third-most home wins for the program since turning to DII.
Carson-Newman is one of three teams from the South Atlantic Conference in the rankings. Catawba slots in at seven, with Lenoir-Rhyne three spots behind at ten.
Six other schools in the Southeast region are in the rankings. Conference Carolinas has the highest ranked team in the region with Young Harris staying at 7. North Greenville is six spots back at 13. Belmont Abbey is 23, with Francis Marion being the last team ranked at 30. North Georgia is the highest rated Peach Belt school at 14, with Lander moving up one spot to 29.
The Eagles must wait a week to find out whether their 37-win season will be enough to earn a NCAA Tournament bid. The NCAA will release one more set of region rankings tomorrow, before the final rankings come out on Sunday May 11 at 10:30 p.m.
