Athletic Department finishes in top 60 of Learfield Director’s Cup

CLEVELAND – For an eighth time in the last 10 years, Carson-Newman has finished in the top 60 of the Learfield Director’s Cup.

The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in NCAA Championships.

Carson-Newman wrapped the year in 58th bolstered by its second-highest winter standing. The Eagles were in 35th following the release of the winter rankings, behind a 12th-place rating in the 2017-18 season.  Carson-Newman set the program’s record for best finish that year when it was 21st at the conclusion of the academic year. 

 


 


The Eagles finished the year with 327 points, good for fourth amongst SAC programs behind Wingate (2nd), Catawba (23rd) and Lenoir-Rhyne (27th).  C-N finished with the seventh-most points in the Southeast Region behind the three other SAC schools and the PeachBelt’s North Georgia (21st), Flagler (33rd) and Columbus State (52nd).  

All told, Carson-Newman scored points in 10 sports.  

The spring saw Carson-Newman score points in baseball (42nd – 25 points), women’s golf (61st – 12 points), women’s track (56th – 11.8 points) and men’s track (39th – 32.5 points).  

Carson-Newman scored points from five sports in the winter, netting 50 points apiece for women’s basketball’s round of 32 appearance and men’s swimming’s 24th-place finish. Men’s track, led by National Champion Andre Morrison in the 60 meters, generated 53 points with an 18th-place finish.  The Women’s Swim program’s 28th place finish netted 45.5 points, while men’s basketball got the department 25 points for appearing in the NCAA tournament.  

C-N got 25 points in the fall rankings for the football program’s playoff appearance.
