PUEBLO, Colo. – Carson-Newman collected its first All-American of the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and qualified its relay team to the event final.

Sydney McCarty (Sevierville, Tenn.) was named a First Team All-American for her seventh-place finish in the women’s long jump on day one of competition at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl on Thursday afternoon.

McCarty hit her top mark of 6.05m on her first jump, which was the second-best attempt of her flight, putting her in sixth place through the preliminary round. Only one athlete surpassed the high-flying Eagle in the championship flight as McCarty finished as the only All-American in the event from a school on the East Coast.

McCarty becomes just the fourth female track and field First Team All-American in program history, joining Sade de Sousa, Kadidja Sangare, and Tori Gaul.

Denise Hernandez of Lewis took home the national championship in the event with a distance of 6.40m, also set in her first jump.

The men’s 4×400 meter relay team took place in its preliminary heat as well on Thursday afternoon, placing fourth in its heat with a time of 39.82. Of note, top seed Pittsburg State was involved in a foul with Catawba in lanes five and six, resulting in a “Did Not Finish” (DNF) from both teams, eliminating them from national championship contention.

The Eagles have the sixth-best preliminary time overall and will occupy lane seven in the championship heat on Saturday, May 24 at 7:20 p.m. The top preliminary time came from Minnesota State with a time of 39.44, the best time run by the Mavericks this season.

The Eagles have two athletes competing on Friday, May 23: Oluwatimi Williams in the discus throw at 7 p.m. and Favour Ekpekpe in the 200-meter preliminaries at 7:45 p.m.
